Appboxes - Recommended Settings

Emby

To access these settings, open your web browser, navigate to your Emby server, click the Settings button, and proceed through each of the settings tabs.

Important

Make sure you read the Network Tab and API Keys Tab sections.

Dashboard Tab

Here you can monitor your server’s alerts, active streams, and current activity.

  • Click the three dots to change the server display name.
  • Regularly check the server for warnings or errors.
  • Review "Latest Activity" for any unusual login or playback events.

General Tab

Configure core settings for your Emby server, including language, cache location, automatic plugin update behavior, login disclaimer text, and custom CSS for the web interface.

  • Leave the preferred display language as default unless another language is needed.
  • Leave the cache path blank.
  • Keep automatic updates enabled to allow plugin updates during idle periods.
  • Set a login disclaimer to display a custom message at the bottom of the login page if desired.
  • Use custom CSS only if you want to modify the appearance of the web interface.

Users Tab

Manage user accounts, profiles, passwords, and parental controls. You can adjust the settings depending on the features you want your users to have. Below is what I recommend changing:

  • Disable 'Allow camera upload'
  • Disable 'Allow media conversion'
  • Disable 'Allow social media sharing'
  • Enable 'Hide this user from login screens when connected remotely'

Emby Premiere Tab

Access and manage features related to Emby Premiere, such as premium features, license activation, and subscription status.

  • You will need to get an Emby Premiere Pass/Key to access transcoding features and allow certain devices to connect to the server. Once you have the pass, the benefits are passed down to the users.

Library Tab

Add, organize, and configure your media libraries.

  • It is recommended not to add or delete libraries, as this will cause issues with AutoScan. You can adjust the metadata and settings within the library to your liking.

Live TV Tab

Set up and manage live TV sources, tuners, channels, and TV guide data.

  • Adjust these settings only if you know what you are doing; otherwise, leave them blank.

Network Tab

Adjust settings for local and remote network access, ports, and advanced connectivity options.

  • Set 'Remote IP address filter mode' to Whitelist
  • Set 'Public http port number' to 80
  • Set 'Public https port number' to 443
  • Make sure the 'External domain' is set to the CDN URL, with no protocol or ports. Example: mydomain.com
  • Set 'Read proxy headers to determine client IP addresses' to Yes
  • Set 'Secure connection mode' to Handled by reverse proxy
  • Disable 'Enable automatic port mapping'

Transcoding Tab

Control video and audio transcoding settings, including hardware acceleration and bitrate limits. Make sure you have Emby Premiere to access hardware transcoding.

  • Set 'Enable hardware acceleration when available' to Yes or Advanced
  • Make sure the 'Transcoding temporary path' is set to /transcode
  • Enable 'Enable throttling'
  • Enable 'Allow subtitle extraction on the fly'
  • Enable 'Allow subtitle font extraction on the fly'
  • Enable 'Enable HEVC video encoding (experimental)'
  • Under the Tone Mapping page, keep both options disabled

Database Tab

View and manage the media database, optimize performance, and handle database backups.

  • Set the 'Database cache size (MB)' to 512
  • Enable 'Attempt to optimize the database on server shutdowns'
  • Make sure 'Analysis row limit' is set to 400

Conversions Tab

Configure media conversion tasks and manage converted files for offline or mobile access.

  • Can be skipped; it is best to use the Downloads Tab.

Scheduled Tasks Tab

Set up scheduled tasks, such as library scans, metadata refreshes, and backup routines.

  • You can adjust any task to your preferences, except for the "Scan media library" task. That should be off. Scanning will be handled by AutoScan.

Logs Tab

Access server logs for troubleshooting, monitoring, and audit purposes.

Cinema Intros Tab

Enable and customize cinema-style intro videos to play before media playback.

Open Subtitles Tab

Configure and manage subtitle downloads and providers for your media. If you want your users to download subtitles, you need to create an account on Open Subtitles. With a free account, you can download 20 per 24 hours. If you pay and get VIP status, you can download 1000 per 24 hours. Subtitles are automatically retrieved for all users by our software.

  • Fill in your information if you want to use Open Subtitles.

Devices Tab

View and manage all devices that have connected to your Emby server.

  • Make sure you are under your Emby Premiere key device limit. You can check under the Emby Premiere tab, and if you need to upgrade, you can visit their website.

Downloads Tab

Manage and monitor content downloaded from your Emby server to connected devices.

  • Make sure you clean up after "Failed" or "Stale" downloads.

Plugins Tab

Browse, install, update, and manage plugins to extend Emby server functionality.

API Keys Tab

Generate and manage API keys for third-party integrations and automated access to your Emby server.

  • Make sure you don't delete any API key required for Kronos.
